He completed his General Surgery Residency Training at Grandview Medical Center in 2006. Dr. Elrod also completed the Residency Directors, Residency Administration Program Fellowship in 2010-2011 through the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education and was the Surgical Specialties Internship Coordinator from 2010-2011 at Grandview Medical Center. He attended the 20th Annual Osteopathic Medical Education Leadership Conference in 2010. Dr. Elrod is board certified in general surgery through the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery and is an oral board examiner. He is a member of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons; American Osteopathic Association; Oho Osteopathic Medical Association; Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons; is Treasurer of Dayton District Academy of Osteopathic Medicine, as well as Grandview Foundation board member.   He currently services on the following Committees at Grandview Medical Center: Medical Executive Committee; Osteopathic Medical Education Committee; Surgical Operations Committee (also at Southview Medical Center); and Quality Improvement and Initiative Committee.

It is the goal of this program to meet the ever changing needs of residency training in General Surgery to meet the demands of training the modern surgeon. We provide progressive, continuous training to satisfy all requirements necessary for eventual certification in General Surgery by the American Osteopathic Association through the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. This program is under the direction of the Department of General Surgery at Grandview Hospital through the Residency Program Director at Grandview Hospital.

The Department of General Surgery at Grandview Hospital assumes the obligation to supervise training of General Surgery Residents.

Residents are exposed to basic sciences as related to surgical practice, and have required rotations in various specialty areas relating to the practice of surgery. (This will be defined more clearly later in this outline). There is special emphasis on developing technical skills, diagnostic competency, sound medical and surgical judgment, preoperative and postoperative care, as well as progressive development and responsibility in the seven competencies: professionalism, Osteopathic principles and practices, medical knowledge, communication and interpersonal skills, practices-based learning, systems-based practice, and patient care. Grandview’s General Surgery residency program provides a variety of educationally based programming:

• Weekly citywide Grand Rounds in conjunction with Wright State University General Surgery Residency Program.
• Daily morning didactics.
• Monthly journal clubs and M/M.
• Monthly CORE lectures (full day of didactics with General Surgery residents from across Ohio).
• Once a week resident-guided power point presentations.

In addition, first year residents will participate in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).

Fellowships: Grandview’s General Surgery program offers exposure to several surgery fellowships in the course of the residency. A General Vascular Fellowship is offered at Grandview while Grant Medical Center in Columbus offers a Trauma/Critical Care Fellowship. Residents in the General Surgery program will have exposure to both programs during the course of the residency.
