The Grandview Hospital Orthopedic Hand Fellowship is a fully-accredited AOA Hand Fellowship, dedicated to providing high-quality orthopedic training under the direction of H. Brent Bamberger, D.O., Program Director, and faculty. The main campus is located at Grandview Hospital in Dayton, OH. Satellite and affiliated training facilities include other local, accredited training sites, and may also include other major specialized training sites throughout the state of Ohio, in Kentucky, Maryland, Texas and elsewhere by elective rotation.
The purposes of the Grandview Hospital osteopathic orthopedic surgery Hand Fellowship, consistent with AOAO priorities, are to:
A. Provide continuity of didactic and clinical experiences, which will enable the fellow to become proficient in the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of orthopedic hand patients, while integrating osteopathic principles and practices as they relate to the specialty.
B. Provide the fellow with properly organized, progressive responsibility in the care of patients.
C. Provide the fellow with the necessary education and information to successfully complete the AOA certification examination.
D. Provide patients with safe, competent, and comprehensive care.
The Hand Fellowship is twelve (12) consecutive months in duration, with three (3) total positions approved and currently one (1) funded. The institution is able to provide sufficient patient load with diverse pathology to properly train three orthopedic hand fellows, including a balance of both hospitalized and ambulatory patients, to allow for the fellow's progressive management of patients. All orthopedic surgery hand fellows may have opportunities, by agreement with the Program Director, to maintain their skills in general orthopedic hand surgery, as long as it does not interfere with the core expectation to develop in their chosen hand subspecialty.
The didactic and clinical curriculum is competency-based according to the AOA General Competencies. Didactic sessions include lectures, literature review, board review, journal club, daily and weekly conferences, and participation in morning report and grand rounds. Additional didactic activities are available at affiliated rotation sites. Successful completion of the program will lead to eligibility to sit for the CAQ exam via the AOBOS.
